Abstract :
Objective: Pregnant women with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus are at risk for both first trimester spontaneous abortion and major congenital malformation. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between serum level of selenium and the occurrence of spontaneousabortion in pregnant women with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.Subjects and Methods: Blood glycosylated hemoglobin (HBAic ) , plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), blood reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathioneperoxidase (GSH-Px) and serum selenium were estimated in 35 age matched pregnant women of the same social class with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM-I); 20 undergoes spontaneous abortion (the study group) and 15 with normal outcome (the controls). Results: The data represented that pregnant patients with IDDM suffering from abortion had significant lower levels of GSH and Selenium with significant high levels of MDA reflecting oxidative stress in their group compared to those who had normal outcome. The significant inverse correlationof Selenium with HBAjc , and MDA and the significant positive correlation of Selenium with GSH in IDDM demonstrated the importance of Selenium. Conclusion: Our results gave clear evidence that selenium has vital protective role as an antioxidant especially among insulin dependent diabetic pregnant women.
