Abstract :
Failed ankle arthrodesis is a challenging orthopedic problem. The complexity of this problem is further increased when associated with additional complications, such as osteomyelitis, leg length inequality, or complex foot deformities. In many instances the only available solution for these problemsis amputation. This study reported twelve cases of complex distal tibial and ankle pathology or failed ankle arthrodesis treated with Ilizarov external fixator. All of the cases are available for follow up and nine of them (75%) achieved good results with solid ankle arthrodesis and resolution of associated pathology. The Ilizarov external fixatoris proved to be a good surgical tool in these difficult cases in which amputation is the alternative.
