  • Abstract
    Background: Oxidative stress appears to play a major role in the development of cardiovascular diseases and the progression of coronary artery disease. Exercise training promotes favorable effects on cardiovascular state. Aims: To evaluate the effect of endurance training on (glutathione and malondialdehyde) and VO2max on coronary artery disease patients. Methods: Thirty patients with coronary artery disease were divided randomly into the endurance training (15 patients) and control groups (15 patients). The endurance-training group exercised on a stationary bicycle ergometer at moderate intensity. The exercise was performed in three session per week for eight weeks. Patients in the control group did not receive any type of exercise. The oxidative biomarkers (glu-tathione and malondialdehyde) and VO2max in the control group were measured before and after the study duration. Results: Glutathione in the endurance training group improved from (842.42±112.84 to 976.39±145.43µmol (p 0.003). Malondialdehyde in the endurance-training group changed from 7.67±1.22 to 6.5±1.21µmol (p 0.005) VO2max increased from 23.72±2.17 to 27.7±5.11 ml/min/kg. Conclusion: Endurance training for patients with coronary artery disease results in a favorable changes in oxidative biomarkers and VO2max.
