Abstract :
Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and practice of dentists about 2007 American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for infective endocarditis prophylaxis in private dental clinics, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a multi-items questionnaire consisted of 33 questionswere distributed to private dental clinics in Riyadh City. The survey was meant to assess the knowledge and practice among dentists regarding (2007AHA) guidelines for infective endocarditis prophylaxis.Results: A sample of 216 dentists from 89 private dental clinics with 77.27% response rate. 70.4% (n=152) of dentists reported that they encounter few cases per year of patients with IE. Almost more than half of dentists (51.9%) treat their patients who are at risk for IE while the rest prefer to refer those patients to a tertiary care centres. 48.1% of them were using 2007 (AHA 2007) guidelines for this purpose. The average of the correct answers regarding cardiac conditions that are at increased risk of IE and needs prophylaxis was 41.9%. However, 71.4% were familiar with dental procedures that require antibiotic prophylaxis for IE.Conclusions: Relatively moderate level of awareness toward (AHA 2007) guidelines was found among dentists. Promotion of guidelines and more education on this field are needed.
