  • Abstract
The brake pad for heavy duty applications is made from conventional powder metallurgy process. It involved compaction and sintering of powder. Steel backing plates are joined together with friction element during pressure sintering. The present investigation deals with the new brake friction materials with built-in powder based backing plate produced by “hot powder preform forging” technique (near to net-shape). The aim of the present investigations is to provide improved manufacturing technology for brake pad as a product employed in heavy duty aircraft applications. The performance of these brake pads has been evaluated as per Aeronautics Industries Regulation on Subscale Dynamometer. Number of combination ingredients and their effects on wear, run down time (RD time), coefficient of friction, fluctuation in coefficient of friction and temperature rise were studied. The brake pads so characterized, posses low wear rate, and the run down time with Coefficient of friction maintained at the same level as in compaction and sintering technique
