Abstract :
Malay house is given priority not only as home and daily activities but also as perfect sign of Malay life. The characters of Malay house can be seen not only at part of the house but in rituals, materials, name and position of the house. Malay traditional house is a family home, discussion place, family tradition place and shelter. The type of house is determined by its roof shape. The key to getting ideal house is by deliberation and co-operation which are translated into rituals, measurements, parts and designs of the house. Rituals that are commonly conducted along the construction of the house named as “Beramu”, “Mematikan Tanah” and “Menaiki rumah”. The purpose of the rituals is to protect the constructors and people from disaster and tutelary spirit. The tools for these rituals have certain meaning and values according to Malay culture. Site of the house, orientation and timber to be used for the construction are also determined according to Malay tradition. Measurement of the building is believed to determine the destiny of the house and commonly, the measurement is done by comparing with constructor height or by amount of rafter and beam. Commonly, to measure the height of a house, height of a man (husband) is used while for area of the house, woman’s (wife) hand length is used as measurement. In Malay traditional house, there are several types of pole with different name and function. In Malay traditional house, the front stairs, arrangement of stairs, the way the stairs are tied is said to have special meanings. Cross beam is also called as tradition border, the limit that a man can enter if there is no man inside the house. That is some Influence of Tradition, Belief and Culture in the Construction of Malay Traditional House
