Abstract :
Hamka is a Malay archipelago figure that is synonymous with the soubriquet theologian and has written more than 100 books in various fields. It is not only his theologian traits that has made him admired but his ability as a leader, writer, thinker, poet and race champion that makes him belong to the Malay archipelago community. This writing will show Hamka’s personality and charisma in championing the unification of the Malaysia-Indonesia homogeneous race based on inspiration and aspiration throughout his life. The emergence of issues threatening the harmony of the two nations have indeed challenged the homogeneous spirit that have been inherent for hundreds of years. This homogeneous spirit and morale has been increasingly sidestepped even going unnoticed by some of the new generation because of the patriotic nature of the nation state identity. Hamka has realised the potential fragmentation of racial identity and damage to homogeneous values should it not be defended by Malaysia and Indonesia. Through studying and abstracting Hamka’s works whether in the field of history, politics, novels, philosophy and biographies, several elements that unites the homogeneous race will be seen as evidence that Hamka had an aspiration and mission in uniting the homogeneous race. Through his writings, Hamka made Malacca the symbol of the fall of the homogeneous race while simultaneously, championing religious thinking as a unifier. Other than fighting to fend off external influences debilitating the race, Hamka made language, writing and literature as a symbol of homogeneous race unification. His repudiation of the centric attitude and his strengthening of the homogeneous race identity is a struggle in ensuring that the Malays and the Muslims in both nations are united. The discovery of Hamka’s struggles through works in the fields of history, language, culture and religion can be used as a guide in the context of a homogeneous nation in ensuring that the nation-state relations is more harmonious and with the Malay world identity.
