FILM AND THE TECHNOLOGY REVOLUTION: PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF CGI FROM THE AESTHETIC AND CREATIVE ASPECTS

The opposing currents of globalization and the explosion of technology, especially in the making of films in Malaysia has created a revolution of the true meaning of creativity among most of the filmmakers. The emergence of special effects technology or Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) in the film industry has changed the film making landscape globally while simultaneously giving a more dynamic definition towards the meaning of quality and the potential of local films. However, not all practitioners of film industries thought that the use of technology for visual effects will guarantee the production of good quality films that can challenge their creativity. Thus, this article discusses the views and opinions of local and foreign film practitioners in the making of films and to what extent this aspect is able to truly produce films of good quality. The different views towards the aesthetic values of films before and after the emergence of this technology will also be the basic foundation towards the findings of this study.
