Abstract :
Peritoneal cavity was first used for dialysis in guinea pig in 1923 by Ganter. Boen described intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD) in 1961, in which dialysis fluid was infused into the peritoneal cavity and then drained out intermittently, in pa- tients with renal failure. Tenckhoff developed a catheter which led to nightly dialysis using a cy- cler during 1960 and 1970. Untill that period peri- toneal dialysis (PD) was used only for acute renal failure.
