Abstract :
Starting from the academic year of 2005-2006, teaching of first reading by using soundshas been determined in Turkey. Being parallel to this development, teaching of writing has beenstarted to be given directly using cursive writing technique. With this change in writing courseof primary school, the ministry of national education (MONE) has aimed that students, at theend of the 5th grade, acquire a writing that is readable, running, quick, leaned and cursive, anduse this cursive writing in their regular practice. This study evaluated the changes in cursive writing samples after the end of a six-year time period. Toward the aim of the study, a criterion list was developed by the researcher to detectgeneral mistakes in cursive writing samples gathered from the 5th grade students.By using the results obtained from statistical analysis of the criterion list, comments andimplications were provided on the achievement of the goal of the writing course for the 5thgrade students who utilize cursive writing beginning from the first grade.
