Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine students’ level of knowledge regarding the influenceof events during meiosis over genetic diversity and the influence of a lecture of independentassortment model over students’ knowledge. Second year students taking Biology 2 course in Xuniversity Science Education program participated in the study. During the teaching of meiosis,a lecture related to the model was delivered. At the beginning of the study 80 students completedthe open-ended measurement instrument while 67 students completed it at the end of the study. It was understood that students usually accounted for genetic diversity by means of meiosis andthe crossing over which occurs during meiosis and none mentioned independent assorment. However, following the lecture by model, students realized the effect of independet assorment.
