Abstract :
The aim of this study is to determine the effects of a dynamic software on the achievement of pre-service mathematics teachers in applications of derivative and identify their opinions about computer-assisted instruction. As the dynamic mathematics software, GeoGebra is used in the study. The sample of the study comprises of 35 pre-service mathematics teachers in the epartment of Mathematics Education Program of a state university in Turkey. An achievement test for applications of derivative and opinion form are used as data collecting tools of the study carried out with embedded design as a part of mixed method. After the analysis of data it is concluded that computer-assisted instruction method in which dynamic mathematics software is used has a positive effect on the achievement of pre-service mathematics teachers in applications of derivative. In addition, it is determined that pre-service teachers’ opinions support the usage of this method in other mathematics lessons because of the features of this method which are visualize, concretization, understanding by applying and interpreting and increasing retention. Especially, it has been determined that this method has contributed to the visualization and concretization of the maximum and minimum problems and the Mean Value, Fermat and Rolle Theorems.
