Abstract :
The basic aim of this research is determining teachers’ multicultural competence perceptions depending on various variants. With this aim teachers’ multicultural competence perceptionsis examined according to these independent variants: gender, the city where teachers spend most of their lives, severance, the type of school and democratic attitude. 413 teachers who work at primary schools, secondary schools, high schools and occupational technical high schools in Bahçelievler, Bakırköy and Bağcılar district which are on the European side of İstanbul in 2012-2013 educational term have taken part in this research. Data of this research has been collected via perceptions of multicultural competence scale which was developed for lecturers by Başbay and Kağnıcı (2011) and democratic attitude scale developed by Gözütok (1995). Based on findings of this research it has been seen that teachers perceive themselves “highly enough” on multicultural competence and awareness which constitutes these competences, aspects of knowledge and skills. What’s more it has been concluded that there are differences between teachers’ perceptions of multicultural competence and awareness which constitutes this competence, perception on knowledge and skills according to these variants: cities they spend most of their lives, severances and type of school but there has been no differences according to gender.It has been seen that there is a positive relation between teachers’ multicultural competence perception and their democratic attitudes.
