Abstract :
As one of the media which produce meaning, cinema has a considerably potent linguistic structure. Every film reproduces the content of its text through methods of visualization. During the production of image in cinema, artificial lighting is an indispensible element just as naturel lighting because the director is able to create meaning in visual images by conducting formal operations on light and its effects. The objective of lighting design in cinema is not obtaining a certain lighting level but constructing an aesthetic structure which reflects the desired effect. Through a conscious design and light effects, feelings like horror, sorrow and happiness can be represented within a web of meanings. This study analyses the methods of using lighting to create meaning in cinema and presents semantic analyses of three films selected as samples through content analysis method.
