BAHASA JURI DALAM PROGRAM MENTOR LEGEND: SATU ANALISIS RAGAM BAHASA ZA’BA

Nowadays, reality TV shows introduce the judging format to assess the participants. In relation to that, this study was conducted to examine and evaluate the use of language variation by the juries in a reality TV show, Mentor Legend 2014-2015, when giving opinions and critiques. The study employed a qualitative approach, using the non-participant observation and audio-visual recordings, which were later transcribed as text conversations. Content analysis was used to examine and evaluate the use of language variations based on the concept of language variation by Za’ba. The results showed that twelve language variations were used by the juries when they shared their opinions or critiques. However, in this article, only six dominant language variations will be discussed. They are: 1)bahasa melampau, 2)bahasa naik, 3)bahasa menggiat, 4)bahasa berulang, 5)bahasa sindiran, and 6)bahasa bertimbal. In conclusion, the juries in Mentor Legend used various language variations when they shared their opinions, critiques and advices. It is important for every individual to choose appropriate types of language variation when interacting with other people. This is because appropriate use of language variation can help the listeners to better understand the message conveyed by the speaker.
