Abstract :
This commentary is a story about the background of the International Women’s Day. Based on the arguments that social movements challenging formal history writing have their own “formal histories” centring either the place or perspective from which the history of an event like 8 March (International Women’s Day) is written, and that the International Women’s Day is not infrequently used by the market and/or politics in ways that produce pictures unrelated to the meaning of the day for uprising women, this commentary is a story telling that the 8 March originated with and has remained inherently attached to women’s uprising against their oppression. The International Women’s Day is a product of women’s struggle at various scales all over the world, and has always been celebrated by a plurality of women with multiple concerns related to gender equality.
