Turkish Adaptation of Dempster Practice Behaviour Scale Measuring Autonomy-Related Behaviours: A Validity and Reliability Study

Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine if the Turkish version of Dempster Practice Behaviour Scale, which was developed by Judith Dempster in 1990, is a valid and reliable instrument for nurses in Turkey.Method: This methodological study was conducted with nurses working at two public medical faculty hospitals (N=332) located in the city of Istanbul after having received ethical approval and institution permissions. The scale’s language validity was primarily conducted and then its validity and reliability analyses were performed.Results: It was determined that the goodness-of-fit indexes taking place in the 30-item original version of the scale did not verify the original structure. Accordingly, an acceptable compatibility level was reached through the elimination of items which showed low correlation with the full extent of the scale and performance of some modification suggestions in the re-performed confirmatory factor analysis. It was found that the scale’s internal consistency coefficients varied between 0.666 and 0.874 in the sub-scales and was 0.857 in the overall scale.Conclusion: It was determined in this study that the three sub-scales and 15-item Turkish version of Dempster Practice Behaviour Scale met the validity and reliability criteria at an acceptable level.
