Abstract :
ThisstudyaimedatdeterminingthequalityoftheEnglishPaper1(EP1)itemsofUPSRtrialexaminationforsixgradersintermsofitsreliability,validityanditemscharacteristics.Italsosoughttodeterminethedifficultylevelsof40multiple-choiceitemsconsistingfiveconstructsofvocabulary,languageandsocialexpression,grammar,cloze-comprehensionandreadingcomprehension.Anumberof525primaryschoolsstudentswererandomlyselectedfrom3876studentsinKualaSelangor,Malaysia.UsingtheRaschmeasurementmodel,thevalidityevidenceswereshownthroughtheresultsofPrincipleComponentAnalysis(PCA),fitstatisticsanditemdistractoranalysis.TheresultsfromPCAanalysisshowedtheabsenceofseconddimensioninthetest,whichmettheassumptionofmoderntestingtheory.Fitstatisticsanalyseshaveidentifiedsevenmisfititemsthatarebeyondtheacceptablerange(0.7-1.3logit).Itemdistractoranalysishasidentifiedfiveproblematicitemswherebythreeofthemarealsomisfititems.SummarystatisticsshowsthatthereliabilityindicesofCronbach‟sAlphaweregreaterthan0.80andseparationindicesweregreaterthan2.Thisstudywouldbenefitteachersinimprovingexistingassessmentpracticebyspreadingouttheimportanceofitemanalysisinschools,particularlyinlanguagetesting.
