Abstract :
ThearchaeologicalsiteofCercadilla (Cordoba,Spain) includesacompletechronologicalsequencefromthe3rdto12 thcenturies. ThemostrelevantmonumentisaRomanpalacedatedbetweentheendofthe3rdcenturyandthebeginningofthe4thcenturyAD. ItisbelievedthatitwastheheadquartersoftheEmperorMaximianoHerculeo.Abathtubwithmuralpaintingshasbeenfoundinthethermalzoneofthepalace.Regardingtheoccupationofthearchaeologicalsiteinthemedievalperiod,itshouldbepointedoutthattwohouseswithmuralpaintingswerefound; thesebelongtotheCaliphalera(10th-11thcenturies). DuringtheCaliphalera,thearchaeologicalsitewasmostlyoccupiedbyoneofthelargesuburbssurroundingthewalledcity.Cercadillawasgraduallyabandoned;thisprocessstartsatthebeginningofthe11thcentury. ThisstudyisfocusedontheanalysisofpigmentsandpreparatorylayersofredandwhitemuralpaintingsoftheRomanperiodinthebathzoneandontheanalysisofpigmentsinmuralpaintingsintwohousesoftheCaliphalera.Inthethermalzone,thewallshaveawhitemuralpaintingwithverticalandhorizontalredbands,whilethewallsinthetwoCaliphalhousespresenttheredmuralpaintingdecoratedwithwhitestripes.TechniquessuchasOpticalMicroscopy (OM), ScanningElectronMicroscopyincombinationwithEnergyDispersiveX-rayMicroanalysis (SEM-EDX),X-rayDiffraction(XRD), microX-rayDiffraction (μ-XRD), WavelengthDispersiveX-ray Fluorescence (WD-XRF),andFourierTransform-InfraredSpectroscopy (FT-IR) havebeenusedtostudythemuralpaintingsofthisarchaeologicalsite. TheresultsallowedtodeterminethecompositionofthematerialsusedandtounderstandthedifferencesbetweenthetechnologiesemployedinRomanandCaliphalremainsstudied.
