Abstract :
ThepurposeofthisstudywastoanalyzevariouscharacteristicsandclassificationofC-shapedrootcanalsandevaluatethecausesofendodonticfailureofC-shapedrootcanalsbyexaminingtheresectedrootsurfacewithanendodonticmicroscopeandascanningelectronmicroscope(SEM).Forty-twoteethwithC-shapedrootcanalswereincludedinthisstudyandhadundergoneintentionalreplantationsurgery.Beforesurgery,periapicalradiographyandcone-beamcomputedtomographyweretaken.TherootcanalconfigurationwasanalyzedandclassifiedaccordingtoMelton’sclassificationatcoronalandapicallevel.Afterinjectionof1:100,000epinephrinewith2%lidocaine,thetoothwascarefullyextracted.Aftertheroot-endresection,theresectedrootsurfacewasexaminedusinganoperatingmicroscopeandSEM.Mandibularsecondmolarsweremostfrequentlyinvolvedteeth(90.4%).ThemostfrequentlyobservedrootcanalconfigurationswereC1atthecoronallevel(45.2%)andC3attheapical3mmlevel(45.2%).ThemostcommoncauseoffailureforaC-shapedrootcanaltreatmentwasaleakycanal(45.2%),followedbyanisthmus(23.8%),missingcanal,overfilling,andiatrogenicproblems.Inconclusion,C-shapedrootcanalsweremostfrequentlyfoundinmandibularsecondmolars.Themostcommoncauseoffailurewasaleakycanalandisthmus.
