  • Abstract
    Somechildrenmayencounterdifficultiesinprocessingsensorystimuli,whichmayaffecttheirabilitytoparticipatein activitiesofdailyliving.Self-regulationabilitiesmayalsoaffectchildrenonhowtoprocessdifferentsensoryexperiences.The SensoryProcessingandSelf-RegulationChecklist(SPSRC)wasdevelopedasasingle,parent-reportedinstrumentforthe examinationofsensoryprocessingandself-regulationdifficultiesinchildren.Aims.Thisstudyisaimedatevaluatingthe psychometricpropertiesoftheSPSRCandexaminethepatternsofself-regulationandsensoryprocessinginchildrenwithand withoutautismspectrumdisorder(ASD).Methods and Procedures.ThecontentsoftheSPSRCwerevalidatedbyagroupof experts,andafieldtestwassubsequentlyconductedtoexaminethereliabilityandvalidityofthisinstrumentinasampleof997 typicallydevelopingchildrenand78childrenwithASD.Outcomes and Results.Theresultsofthevalidationandfieldtest analysessuggestthattheSPSRCexhibitshighinternalconsistency,goodintraraterreliability,andavalidabilitytomeasureand discriminatesensoryprocessingandself-regulationinchildrenaged3–8yearswithandwithoutASD.Conclusions and Implications.ThecurrentresultssupportedthereliabilityandvalidityofSPSRCtoassessachild’ssensoryprocessingandself- regulationperformanceinactivitiesofdailyliving.Thestudyfindingswarrantfurtherinvestigationtocomparetheperformance oftheSPSRCwithlaboratory-basedtests,asthiswouldbetterelucidatesensoryresponsivityinchildrenwithsensory modulationdisordersfrombothclinicalandresearchperspectives.
