Abstract :
Thisstudycomparedgrowth-facilitatingandgrowth-constrainingexperiencesofpracticeplacementsasperceivedbyoccupational therapystudentsfromJapanandtheUnitedKingdom(UK).FifteenstudentsfromJapanand14fromtheUKusedanominalgroup technique(NGT)torank,individuallyandingroups,theirsubjectivelearningexperiencesduringpracticeplacements.Qualitative analysisandsimpletabulationbasedonrankingofitemsobtainedintheNGTwereperformed.Fiveitemcategorieswereidentified frombothJapaneseandUKstudents:self-reflection,theroleofsupervisor,senseofresponsibility,clinicalknowledgeandskills,and timemanagement.Resultsshowedthatallstudentsperceivedopportunitiesforself-reflectionandfeedbackfromsupervisorsas growthfacilitatingandstudents’passiveattitudestowardsrequirementsofpracticeplacementsasgrowthconstraining.Country- specificdifferencesbetweenstudentswereobservedinclinicalknowledgeandskills,senseofresponsibility,andtime management.Japanesestudentsperceivedthatpreparatorystudyledtosuccessfullytreatingclientsduringplacement,andthey tendedtocommittoplacementassignmentsattheexpenseoftimeoutside.UKstudentsvaluedworkingindependentlywitha senseofresponsibilitybutconsideredtime-managementproblemswithintheirplacementhoursasgrowthconstraining.These differencescanbeexplainedbydifferentsocialnormsandexpectationsofstudentsfromJapanandtheUK.
