Abstract :
Almostallinterventionsinoccupationaltherapyrequiretheactiveengagementofthepatients.However,noscale
hasbeenspecificallydesignedforassessingengagementinoccupationaltherapy.Thepurposesofthisstudyweretodevelopthe
occupationaltherapyengagementscale(OTES)andtoexamineitsunidimensionality,reliability,andpredictivevalidity.
Methods.TheOTESwasdevelopedthroughthereviewofsimilarscales,eightexperts’opinions,cognitiveinterviews,andpilot
testing.TheunidimensionalitywasverifiedwithRaschmodelfittingandprincipalcomponentanalysis.TheRaschreliability
wasalsoestimated.Pearson’scorrelationcoefficient(r)wasusedtovalidatethepredictivevaliditybyexaminingtheassociation
betweentheRaschscoresoftheOTESandpatients’performanceofactivitiesofdailyliving(ADL).Results.Atotalof253
patientswithstrokewereratedby22therapistsusingtheOTES.Themeanageofthepatientswas623±132yearsold,and
65.2%ofthepatientsweremale.TheinfitandoutfitMNSQofthe12itemsoftheOTESrangedfrom0.62to1.34.The
unexplainedvarianceofthefirstdimensionoftheprincipalcomponentanalysiswas4.0%.Themeanpersonreliabilityofthe
OTESwas0.88.Pearson’srbetweentheOTESandpatients’ADLperformancewas0.37.Conclusions.TheresultsofRasch
analysissupportedthattheitemsoftheOTESwereunidimensional.TheOTEShadsufficientpersonreliabilityandpredictive
