Abstract :
Hoardingisoftendescribedasamedicaldisorder,definedbyapersistentdifficultyindiscardingpossessionsandassociatedhigh
levelsofemotionaldistresswhenforcedtopartwiththese.Thisarticlewilldiscusshowhavingadifferentviewofhoarding,seeing
hoardingasadailyoccupationwhichprovidesvalue,purpose,andmeaningandwitharelationshiptoself-identityandlifepurpose,
couldofferalternateinterventionstosupportanindividualwhohoards.Thearticlewillconsiderthecomponentsofhoarding
activityandhowtheserelatetohealthandwellbeinganddoing,being,belonging,andbecomingasunderstoodbyoccupational
therapists.Thearticlewillconsiderwhatoccupationaltherapy,aprofessionwhichconsidersaperson’sdailyoccupations,the
thingsthatoccupytheirtimeandwhichgivemeaningtotheirexistence,couldofferasanalternativetocurrenthoarding
interventions.Proposalsforoccupationaltherapyinterventionswillbesuggestedwhichwouldsupportoccupationalchoice,
supportengagementinactivitieswhichhavemorepositiveoutcomesonaperson’shealth,andseektoaddressbarrierswhich
limitengagementandoccupationalperformanceinactivitieswithintheperson’shomeenvironment
