Abstract :
The first medical schools were founded in Greece and in Anatolia. In the classical antiquity, medical “schools” were essentially schools of thought formed by an influential medical practitioner and his followers. There were no academic buildings dedicated to medical training. Hippocrates from Kos and Galen from Pergamon were two leading physicians and medical educators both worked in Asclepions in different ages. One of the first medical schools, Gondi Shapur was founded in Iran during the medieaval Islam. Razes and Avicenna lived on that country and wrote books which were the reference books till 16th century in European medical schools. In middle ages, it was the period for the rise of the universities. First medical school as a part of a university was opened in Salerno, Italy. Montpellier, Paris, Padua, Leiden, Edinburg and many other universities opened medical schools in between 12-16th centuries. Medical education in Germany became dominant in the 19th century and affected the studies in many countries including USA. From the beginning of 20th century USA began leading medical education. In Anatolia, medical education was taught in Dar al Shifa like Gevher Nesibe and Süleymaniye. First medical school, Tıbhane was founded in 14 March 1827.
