Abstract :
Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine burnout level of the sixth grade students at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine and the affecting factors. Materials and Methods: In this particular study, which is in a supplementary kind, 220 of the sixth grade students of 2008-2009 education year of the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University could be reached. The survey form that questioned some of the socio-demographic characteristics of participants and that included Maslach burnout inventory was implemented under observation. One Way Anova and t-test were used in analyses. Results: The average age of participants was 24.7 ± 1.1; while 52.1% were male, 53.0% were in English group and 97.3% were single. 44.3% of participant stated that they ran errands such as document, patient and sample delivery during the internship period. 81.8% stated that conduct of simple works irrelevant to the education and 69.5% stated that unpaid status are some of the problems. The points that students, who had difficulty in spending and who were not satisfied with being an intern, earned from all sub-scales were determined to be significantly higher compared to other groups. It was determined that the interns who saw unpaid status of internship as a problem obtained higher points from emotional burnout and desensitization. It was determined that the interns who saw the conduct of works irrelevant to the education and the number of night shifts as a problem obtained higher points from the emotional burnout sub-scale. Conclusion: In this study, it was found out that unpaid status of internship, negative relationships with the supervisors, conduct of works irrelevant to education and intense night shift system negatively affected the emotional burnout, desensitization status and personal success of interns. It shall be convenient to make necessary arrangements in order to eliminate such factors that cause burnout status of interns.
