Abstract :
Objective: This study was designed to determine some characteristics of inpatients who died in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Adult Hospital (HUFMAH) during the years of 2009, 2010 and 2011. Materials and Methods: The data of this retrospective and record based descriptive study, was gathered from epicrisis reports, death certificates and death registries. International Classification of Diseases 10 (ICD-10) was used to classify the cause of deaths. Data of inpatients who died were evaluated whether they are consistent, accurate and fulfilled. Central tendency and disperse measures and percent distributions were calculated and Chi-square test was used for comparisons. Results: The total number of deaths in HUFMAH was 666 in 2009, 581 in 2010 and 408 in 2011. Yearly hospital crude mortality rates were 18.0‰ in 2009, 24.0‰ in 2010 and 16.7‰ in 2011. The proportion deaths younger than 60 years of age was decreasing significantly and it was 43.2% in 2009, 38.7% in 2010 and 33.7% in 2011 (p 0.05). The proportion of deaths in intensive care units and service of internal medicine consisted 75.3% in 2009, 74.2% in 2010 but it was 37.5% in 2011 probably due to the high number of deaths were in emergency services in 2011 (36.6%). In 2009 and 2010, “cardiopulmonary arrest” was on the first rank (11.4% and 17.6% respectively) among the causes of deaths, but in 2011, it was on the third rank and decreased to 3.6%. Consistency between epicrisis forms and death certificates decreased from 2009 to 2011 and it decreased to 41.9% in 2011. Completeness of the forms was lowest in 2009 (58.9%; p 0.001). Conclusion: The hospital death records are the subject of the vital registration system in Turkey. This report shows that complete filling of the death certificate accurately is still problem in three research years and it is needed to investigate the factors affecting this problem.
