Hitungan dalam Naskhah Melayu dan Jawa: Analisis dalam Syair Laksana Kita Mujarabat

This paper analyses the concept of numerations in the Malay and Javanese mind-sets based on two classical writings, Syair Laksana Kita and Mujarabat (Javanese edition). The concept of numeration was perceived as numbers based on its particular calculation. It is found that the articulation of its values could solve some problems occurred in life. The principle of the calculation couldtestify the best times to start all sort of activities such as wedding, house building and job to earn the living. Among the Malays, such concept is used to find the most suitable couple as partner to life. The synchronization is believed could foresee the happiness of the couple’s future. Among the Javanese, the concept of this calculation is called petungan, and it is usually undertaken by the shaman or wise old men. They were frequently referred as experts should there is anyone intending to start crucial thing in their life. Those two texts were used as the main sources in this writing to justify the application of the calculation concept in the lives of the Malay and Javanese.
