Abstract :
This paper revealed the phonetic pattern of a specific vowel in the speech performance of Malay whose second language is English. Previous studies indicate very little documentation of the phonetic properties of Malay and English (as realized by Malay speakers) via acoustic analysis. Hence, the significance of this paper was evidenced throughout Production Test’s findingsparticularly via the spectrographic analysis of vowels /i, i:, I/ in the initial, medial and final position of English and Malay words. It demonstrates several phenomenon of vowels realisational patterns such as longer vowel length of B1 /i/ (word medial position) as compared to B2, longer vowellength of /I/ as compared to /i:/ in the word initial position of B2, similar phonetic pattern (vowel length and quality) between /i:/ and /I/ in the word medial position of B2, and the bilingual Malay speakers awareness of the importance of dissimilar vowel length across B1 and B2 but failedto produce it (acoustically) correctly.
