Abstract :
This study is aims at revealing violence expressed in the annual anthology of Kompas Short Stories during the New Order era, especially from 1992 to 1999. The research was conducted from June to November 2005 in Jakarta. The data were collected from seven annually selected short story anthologies, and analyzed by means of Genetic Structural theory supported by theories on Literature Sociology and Psychology. In this research, a content analysis technique of qualitative approach was employed. Research findings show that the actors of violence in the short stories were dominated by government officials, followed by individuals and groups. The victims are the people coming from the middle to low social class groups. Based on the findings, it is recommended that selected daily short stories should be used in narative fiction analysis of literature learning at Junior High Schools (SMP) and Senior High Schools (SMA). It is also suggested that human rights education should be introduced from early childhood education.
