  • Abstract
By far the most common pulmonary diseases encountered in clinical practice are obstructive disorders characterized by increased resistance to expiratory gas flow resulting in increase in lung volumes. This obstruction may be variable (typical of asthma) or fixed (typical of chronic obstructivepulmonary disease), although many patients have components of both.
