Abstract :
Objective: To ascertain the prevalenceof psychiatric disturbances in a sampleof hirsute women.Methods: This case-control study wascarried out on 100 hirsute womenreferred to a dermatology clinic in Sari,Mazandaran, Iran from 2004 to 2005.One hundred non-hirsute healthycontrol subjects were case-matched fordemographic variables and completedthe symptom checklist revised (SCL–90–R) instrument. Data were analyzedusing SPSS software (version 11).Results: Forty-three percent of thewomen reported psychological distress,with the most common subscales beinginterpersonal sensitivity, paranoid,depression, and obsessive compulsive.In the control group, 42% weresuspicious for mental disorders. Therewas no significant difference betweenthe 2 groups.Conclusion: No significant difference concerning mental health was reportedbetween the hirsute and non-hirsutewomen. This maybe due to patientshaving adapted to their disorder dueto the presence of high social stressconditions in Iran.
