Abstract
Developments in the history of entomology until the discovery of insect parasitoids are summarized. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of entomology in China and Europe, and to the emergence of the idea that certain organisms could be used for biological control of pests. The first description of predators being used as natural enemies of pests dates from approximately 300 AD. Much later insect parasitoids were discovered, first in China (approximately 1100 AD) and next in Europe (approximately 1675 AD).
