Abstract :
The history of library education in the territories now constituting Pakistan, no doubt, dates back to 1915, but the training facilities for library workers were virtually nonexistent on independence. This situation continued for years with the exception of some short courses organized by local or provincial library associations to meet the immediate needs of trained manpower. But soon such arrangements were found inadequate to respond to the information requirements of an independent country. Perhaps, it was more seriously felt at Karachi, which was then the capital of the country, where libraries had become necessity for various ministries and organization in mid-1950s. More than anyone else, Dr. Abdul Moid, then librarian at the University of Karachi, sensed this need and consequently initiated a scheme for the institution of the Post-Graduate Diploma course in library science at the University. But, truly speaking, it was Dr. Mahmud Husain, then Dean of the Faculty of Arts, who not only supported the idea but piloted the case too, through the various academic bodies of the University and got it approved.
