Currently Karachi city has been divided in eighteen towns and samples of three towns were collected at the consumer end. Ninety-seven water samples were collected from three towns of Karachi city and quality of drinking water was examined by Most Probable Number (MPN) techniques. The results were compared with WHO, EU, Canada, USA and Russia guidelines. It was found that municipal water is almost contaminated in every town with the hazardous organisms of public health imponance in higher than any permitted standards. This is an acute problem of Karachi city. where free style of disposal of toxic industrial waste water effluents into the natural water contaminates the surface and ground water.
