Tax Registries, Quantity and Price of Crops: Tax Registries, Tithe Registries and Crop Sales Registries Belonging to Waqfs

This study will introduce three types of detailed registries kept in the waqfs. These are the tax registries, tithe registries and crop sale registries. They are particularly important for studies on the waqf registers and bookkeeping techniques. They show the registration procedure in the waqfs, give information on the tax rates and the ways of collection of cash and in-kind taxes. A distinct feature of the registers is that they present a record of the actual yield of a farmer and the fluctuating grain prices in a given year. Examining similar registries will contribute significantly to research done on the financial and institutional history of waqfs and on local agricultural history. In addition, these registers contain rich data for the history of both prices and accounting.
