The Effects Of Modern Contraceptıve Methods For Males On The Sexual Satisfaction: A Systematic Review

Objective: This study is a systematic review aimed at determining the effect of contraceptive methods used by men on sexual satisfaction of couples. Method: The study was conducted in line with the guideline deveşoped by New York University Institute of National Health Researches. During this process, Pubmed, EBSCO Host, Ulakbim Medical Database, Turkish Medline databases were scanned. During the scan, five English keywords (Vasectomy, Condoms, Sexual satisfaction, Sexual quality of life, Couples) were used with diverse combinations. For Turkish keywords, the words in Turkish Science Terms and the Turkish counterparts of English keywords (Vazektomi, Kondom, Cinsel doyum, Cinsel yaşam kalitesi, Çiftler) were used. Available 670 articles were examined in accordance with their titles and abstracts. Then, repeated articles were removed. Finally, the assessed articles were examined according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Six articles in accordance with these criteria were included into the study. Results: In the studies examined, the effect of vasectomy and condom from modern contraceptive methods was evaluated on sexual satisfaction of couples. Five of the articles included into the study were cross-sectional and one was experimental. Two of these evaluated studies were from USA, tow from Chine, one from Austria, one from South Africa and one from Iran. Condom users were found to have lower sexual satisfaction than those who used other contraceptive methods, but men who decided to use condoms with their partners were found to have higher sexual satisfaction. It was concluded that vasectomy-applied men and their partners had an increase in sexual satisfaction. Conclusion: This systematic review reveals that studies on modern contraceptive methods for males do not adversely affect sexual satisfaction of couples, in fact increase the same. It also revealed the quantitative limitations of the studies relating to the subject. It is suggested to increase the number of randomized-controlled studies conducted in this regard and to perform meta-analyses with high level of evidence, so that the results can be generalized, couples can be directed and nurses can guide.
