Abstract :
Summary writing requires understanding of texts. One of the strategies to understand texts is to determine important parts constituting content and schematic structures peculiar to genres which form the content of the summary. Therefore, summary writing begins with comprehension and continues with studies for perception and application of the content and structure of summaries. In this research genre-based reading and summary writing activities in Turkish lessons were classified and evaluated in the sample of 5. Grade Turkish Textbook. A questionnaire was also applied to 36 teachers on the aims of writing summaries, types and frequency of summary writing activities strategies, effective summary activities and sufficiency of summary activities. Summary writing activites were also determined in state and private schools.
