Abstract :
This paper provides a critical view of the dominant discourse in education centering on competences and the type of slant this discourse takes. It also suggest an alternative discourse in this regard with a more holistic approach in mind and which takes on board the issues of critical literacy and social movement organisation, providing due reference to the ideas of John Dewey, Lorenzo Milani and the School of Barbiana, Paulo Freire and those emerging from the World Social Forum.
