Abstract :
This paper highlights the significance of lemuni (Vitex species) as a herbal heritage plant. In the traditional practices, lemuni was utilized to treat cold, diarrhea, asthma and head ache. The medicinal properties of the lemuni extracts include an asanti-inflammatory agent. Community pharmacy could also provide lemuni products e.g. as dental cream, and supplements to relieve premenstrual symptoms. The aim of this study is to review and update the lemuni publications and to discuss the local herbal invention in the form of a pouch, which is not much explored. The literature conclude that natural biomolecules from the lemuni leaves could be obtained from the maceration process, by using aqueous and organic solvents. The extraction protocols and chromatographic plus spectrometric analysis, are the techniques for investigating the chemical substituents such as the polyphenols. The initiative for the lemuni pouch could be anticipated as one alternative in the food industry for the development of Malaysian herbal research.
