  • Abstract
Metaphors help the poems’ meaning implicitly get through to the reader. Thus, uncovering the meaning of a poem consists necessarily in the analysis of the nature of metaphors used. In this manner, this text aims at revealing the metaphorical system of “doğu 1310” (east 1310), a poem by Hilmi Yavuz. The historical events to which the poem implicitly refers, the relation that the poet maintains with tradition and how this tradition is reproduced or transformed in the poem will be made clear through the explication of this metaphorical system. The metaphorical parallels drawn between the elements of nature and those of soldiery and kinship, for example, refers to the members of the eastern society’s gathering around soldiery and kinship. Likewise, metaphors such as rose and mountain refer to the Ottoman society.
