THE METHOD OF CALQUE AND THE EXAMPLES IN FIRST PERIOD (1932-1950) STUDIES FOR TRANSLATING INTO TURKISH

Terms are the scientific instruments providing new information to be comprehended by all researchers in a similar way in academic studies. Terms have a great role in expressing the information correctly, conveying the reliable information to be used in further studies. As a result of linguistic interaction emerged depending on social relations, many foreign terms have entered into Turkish from Eastern and Western languages. In order to translate these foreign terms to Turkish, scientists have done some studies and used different methods. This study is about calque, which is one of the methods often used for translating foreign terms into Turkish. Calque terms have been scanned from 8 glossaries (Bitkibilim Terimleri (Botanik) (1948), Dilbilim Terimleri Sözlüğü (1949), Dirilbilim (Biyoloji) Terimleri (1948), Edebiyat ve Söz Sanatı Terimleri Sözlüğü (1948), Felsefe ve Gramer Terimleri (1942), Tarım Terimleri I (1949), Teknik Terimler I (1949), Türe Terimleri (1948)) published in the first period of studies for translating foreign terms into Turkish. Moreover these calque terms have been divided into two categories: semi-Turkish terms and completely Turkish terms. Besides, calque terms have been analised constructionally and examined to which type these calque terms belong.
