  • Abstract
How scientific terms should be dealt with in general-purpose dictionaries is one of the issues frequently discussed in theoretical studies in the field of lexicography. In particular, the definitions of such a vocabulary in general dictionaries have been mentioned in various studies regarding the definition principles and methods of lexicography. Although generally they are subjects of the dictionaries of terms, existence of the terms of the fields of botany and zoology at the same time in the vocabulary of the daily language, make these dictionary units also to be discussed for general dictionaries. However, considering both the different uses of the language and the principles of lexicography, there are fundamental distinctions in the definition of such words with regard to the daily language-science language, term-word concepts, dictionary types and definition methods. In this study, based on the aforementioned basic distinctions, we will focus on how to define the vocabulary of natural kinds in botany and zoology in Türkçe Sözlük; these headwords will be evaluated in terms of the application of the analytical definition method by comparing with the definitions in the glossary of terms.
