Asymmetric Balance in Russia-China Relations and the United States of America

In this study, economic, political, energy and security related relations between today‟s Russia and China is put forth and it is questioned whether these relations can be transformed into a political or military anti-USA pact or not. Hegemonic power asseveration of the USA and its political and military existence in Middle East, Asia and Asia-Pacific approximate Russia and China to each other and enable them to build cooperation for energy. This cooperation, in turn, accelerate economic, political and military cooperations. However, while Russia gives priority to security issues in its cooperations with China and in SCO (Russia‟s utmost commercial associate), Beijing, not desiring to lose its most important commercial partners, the UN and the USA, prefers a cautious position in that issue and wants to limit relations to economy and energy related fields. The sanctions the Western World applied against Russia after the annexation of Crimea and the superior economic capasity of China cause an asymmetric balance in favor of Beijing in its relations with Russia. Conflicting interests of China and Russia and the asymmetric balance between them make it difficult to develop a political and military anti-America pact.
