The respondentsof the study consisted of 10 Malay students who studied basic Japanese language. The research instrument consists of two oral assignments involving videointeraction of 10 minutes. Interviews were conducted and transcribed to obtain support data for observation. The results of the study were analyzed usingthe modified Communication Strategy Taxonomy from Bialystok (1983), Faerch Kasper (1983), Tarone (1983) and Varadi (1983). It was found thatrespondents who lacked fluency in Japanese and had limited linguistic knowledge of Japanese were found to be using more often communication strategiesthan those who were fluent in Japanese.
