URBANIZATION AND SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT IN BANGLADESH: AN APPLICATION TOWARDS MODIFIED GROWTH POLE MODEL

The modified growth pole asserts that urbanization and spatial development are interrelated process. The principal objectives of this study are to examine the broad rudiments of the modified growth pole theme and to examine the roles of six ecological variables on urbanization and spatial development in Bangladesh. The six hypotheses underlying this study were tested for both urbanization and spatial development separately and for the years 1974 and 1991. The modified growth pole model is examined in this study by employing multiple regression analysis. Results of this study provided an insight to the growth pole theory and its applicability in the Third World dual economic conditions. It is observed from the study that both urbanization and spatial development are inter-linked and urbanization accelerates the process of spatial development.
