PATTERN OF LAND HOLDINGS IN PUNJAB: A GEOGRAPHICAL STUDY

The Indian rural scene is characterized by the highly unequal distribution of land among different strata of farm population. The country depicts distinct pattern of decreasing share of holdings with the increase in size of landholdings. Not only the numbers, the area operated also shows marked disparity in distribution among different land size classes. This type of disparity is found in almost all parts of the country and Punjab holds a typical position in this regard. To analyze the unequal distribution of operational holdings is, therefore of central importance for understanding the agrarian class structure in different parts of the state. The present study intends to: i) examine the determinants of variations in the spatial distribution pattern of operational holdings during 2005-06 in Punjab; ii) find out the extent of inequality between number of holdings and area operated by major caste groups; and iii) suggest measures relevant for policy formulation regarding distribution of operational holdings among major caste groups in the state.
