Colonial Intellectual Hegemony in Malay Novel

This paper reviews intellectual hegemony on the Malay mind in pre-independent era through some novels written by A.Samad Ismail, namely Timbok Tidak Tinggi, Patah Sayang Terbang Jua and Kail Panjang Sejengkal. Through these novels we could quote that those who were considered as public intelligentsia in colonial era were mostly journalists. This group had played signifi cant role in intellectual enlightening and propagation among various strata of the society. They also created nationalism consciousness and movements toward independence through press propaganda since Japanese occupation until post-independence era.
