Abstract :
The functions of literary works are to record the past histories, and traditions which resembled the mentalities of the people. Not only that, it can stretches to function as a source of entertainment whilst at the same time deliver good moral values to the readers. It is well known from the traditional to the modern literature, Malay works discussed various aspects of the events surrounding human life such as politics, economy, society, and its culture. However, topics on food and Malay’s eating culture are rarely discussed. Therefore, this study will examine the ways in which the food and its culture will be extensively discussed. In carrying out the research, this paper will look at some of the traditional works that are Sulalatus Salatin, Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa, Hikayat Raja Pasai, Kitab Gemala Hikmat, Tuhfat Al-Nafis, while at the same time modern works will also being looked at and these works would include Ketupat Cinta, Pelayaran Abdullah Munsyi, “Lemang Nan Sebatang” and “Nasi Ayam Laut Sepinggan.” This study will analyze, interpret and dismantle any associated discussions in regards to the mentioned subject that is food that is available in these selected works. The findings have found the food and the act of eating describe often as symbolisms. Therefore it can be said that, the food and the act of eating also denote another meaning once both being mentioned in the work of literature.
