Abstract :
This study focuses on the relationship and the process in between texts in producing Malay novels. This is what has been categorized in intertextuality as “existence of text in a text” or “dialogue in a text”. It proposed by Julia Kristeva in her framework. She emphasized on the relationships between the hypotext (the short story) and the hypertext (the novel) for the author to achieve ultimate goal that is a text of his own. These analyses focused on S. Othman Kelantan’s novel titled Angin Timur Laut (1967) and his earlier short story in which happened to be using similar title. The findings showed that S. Othman Kelantan was still attached to his previous work. He manipulated the theme, plot, settings and characters elements to produce a so called a new text. It is to be found that the author had gone through similar processes in the framework proposed once by Kristeva’s intertextuality. It could be suggested that these processes were influenced by certain factors as his surroundings, personal life experience and the related history.
